Although Phil Spector's recent murder trial was gruesome tabloid fodder, as a young man he stood proudly at the pinnacle of musical success. From 1962 through 1964 Spector produced a string of pop hits rivaled only by The Beatles and The Beach Boys. His continuous streak of records from "He's A Rebel" through "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Be My Baby," and culminating in "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin,'" was thrilling to experience at the time. I'm convinced that for most people, most of the time, the experience of
listening to (rock and soul) music in the 21st century is essentially
different than it was back in the day. I'd love to know your thoughts.

Sound quality largely sucks today because two distinct types of
compression (file size/bit rate and loudness/dynamic range) destroy
music's sonic subtleties and seriously decrease the emotional impact of
the listening experience.

Why would anyone ever prefer to listen to a mono
recording if the same
music were also available in stereo? For many music lovers, this
question is nonsensical: mono is to stereo as standard definition video
