Their tag line is "a modern spin on classic soul." Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds are by far the best new musical act I've come across in the last few years -- and one that should appeal strongly to fans of classic rock and soul music.

Sister Sparrow (Arleigh Kincheloe) writes excellent songs and sings them with incredible power and passion. Her expressive phrasing evokes Bonnie Raitt or Janis Joplin from time to time, but that voice is all her own. The Dirty Birds are eight superb musicians who perfectly complement Arleigh with tight ensemble arrangements and exciting solos. Together, they put on an explosive live show.

Their first (eponymous) album, released in late November 2010, was among my favorites of that year. "Rock In It" is the track I chose for the Timeline. They've just released their second album, Pound of Dirt, which I like even more. "Another Ride" is the track that first leapt out to me. After seeing them live at a club, I was indelibly hooked. I've embedded a couple of videos on the Home Page this week because they speak so much louder than words. You can also follow their links from our Featured Artist Archive.

They've been paying their dues and honing their chops on the road, the old-fashioned way. I figure they're bound to take off big-time as soon as they get significant national press attention. Their albums are available at Amazon.com and elsewhere. Follow the link to their website to hear their songs, check out their touring schedule, and get to know the band better.
