The Alley Timeline and Timeline Summaries are now current through December 2014. The updated Timeline includes 2431 songs over 70 years. The 34 new songs aim to represent 2014 for posterity's sake, big hits as well as critical favorites, and new artists as well as a few old favorites who are still kickin' it.

New artists in 2014 include Sturgill Simpson, Sam Smith, Hozier, Angel Olsen, Iggy Azelea, Ariana Grande, FKA twigs, and Meghan Trainor. Old favorites include Rosanne Cash, Lucinda Williams, Tom Petty, U2, Jack White, TV On The Radio, St. Vincent, The Black Keys, and D'Angelo.

Highlights from the updated Timeline Summaries: Three new songs from 2014 have the same title as Timeline songs from earlier years: Fever, Happy, and Stay With Me. Check out all 154(!) cover records and duplicate titles.

There are now 111 Top Artists (6 or more songs in the Timeline). Their rankings in the pre-1972 and post-1972 lists provide an alternative hierarchy to the Alley Pantheon. The Top Songwriters list is also interesting. How would you suppose the Motown songwriters stack up with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones?

The Timeline Summaries also include lists of all 46 two-sided singles (e.g., Wouldn't It Be Nice/God Only Knows) and longest and shortest songs (which one is over 18 minutes?).

Comments welcome, as always!
