Who can make comments?

Comments can be made only by (registered) Cats when logged in. Unregistered visitors who start to make a comment are invited to register. See FAQ General Features for more on registration and FAQ Profiles for more on being a Cat.

What can Cats comment on?

Cats can comment on just about all the content on the site -- articles, lists, songs, albums, and artists.

How do I make a comment?

Click on a link that says "comment on article" or "comment on list," etc. Write text into the form that pops up. Click Submit. The next screen allows you to edit, delete, or confirm it. This sequence is always the same.

How do I reply to someone else's comment?

Click on a link that says "reply to this comment." The comment to which you are replying will appear inside the form that pops up. If you wish, you can edit the prior comment to focus on just the part you are replying to. The remainder is the same as making a comment on an article or anything else.

How do I comment on articles and lists?

On the Blog page click the "more" link to see the whole article. On List pages, click the name of a list to see the whole list. Each whole article or list has links at the bottom to read or make new comments. As a shortcut, click on the number in parentheses, in the header of every article and list, to open it with comments displayed.

How do I comment on one specific song or album or artist?

To comment on a song, click the song's Title in the Timeline. To comment on an album or artist, click the album's Title or the artist's Name in the CD Database. To find song and album titles and artists' names quickly, Search for them inside the Timeline and the CD Database.

How do I add a link to a comment?

To add a link to a comment, copy/paste the full URL from the browser address bar into the Comment form. To follow the link from the comment, just reverse the process.

How do I add a LIVE link to a comment?

( 1) Copy/paste the following link into your text where your LIVE link belongs:

<a href="url here" target="_blank">Link Text Here</a>

(2) Replace url here with the actual url -- be sure to leave both quotation marks.
(3) Replace Link Text Here with the word(s) to be clicked on -- NO quotation marks.

If your comment looks like this:

<a href="http://tinyurl.com/2rllrs" target="_blank">My Girl</a> is my favorite song.

You will see this when you post:

My Girl is my favorite song.

Are there any limits to -- or norms for -- what I can post?

There are no technical limits to what Cats can post in lists or comments. However, we intend to create a community on this site where certain norms will be taken for granted and mutually supported. I aim to weed out obnoxious comments of the flamer, troller, and general asshole varieties, but otherwise not to interfere with spirited disagreement. In addition, whenever I become aware of them, I will take down material or links to material that is personally inflammatory or involves illegal activities (e.g., P2P file sharing).

How can we achieve these norms?

Our primary means of achieving these norms is the "flag inappropriate comment" link associated with every comment. Clicking on this link sends an email to Gator, privately calling that comment to his attention. It says, at least one Cat finds something about this post counter to the best interests of the Alley communty. I'm optimistic that this process will work as intended and help to support both spirited and respectful conversation. Please share your thoughts about our norms or the process of maintaining them in the Rock 'n Soul Alley blog topic.

Can I use a new tab or window to make a comment?

No. Do not direct your Browser to open a comment form or to submit a comment in a new tab or window. All steps in the Comment process depend on using pop-up windows on the same page, and are designed to return you to that page at the end of the process. If out of habit you use a new tab (or new window) key by mistake, you should get a browser error message. In that event, use the browser back arrow to return to the previous page.
