THE MOST ESSENTIAL BRUCE
(9)
My nephew started up a game: if you could listen to only ten Bruce songs for the rest of your days, which would they be? Painful fun! Here was my final ten, in no particular order:
Thunder Road
Backstreets
Candy’s Room
Badlands
Promised Land
Blood Brothers
The River
If I Should Fall Behind
Jungleland
Raise Your Hand

Thanks to Tom Morello, Patti Smith and Southside Johnny, whose great covers let me also take Ghost of Tom Joad, Because the Night and The Fever.

Interesting list idea! But I can't imagine such an enumeration without "Born to Run"...

Can't resist jumping in with my Lucky 13 Bruce faves:
1) She's The One
2) Badlands
3) The quartet from The River, as follows:
Hungry Heart
Down In the Street
I Got a Crush on You
You Can Look But You Better Not
Touch...
Also from The River: I'm a Rocker
Cadillac Ranch
Ramrod
From Born in the USA: Cover Me
Glory Days
I'm On Fire
From Tunnel of Love: Brilliant Disguise

I'm with MustangSal. No complaints about the Bruce songs listed but, hey, when did you first turn on to the guy? I'll never forget the first time I heard Born to Run.

I know, I know - Born to Run was my favorite song of all time when I first heard it. But 35 years on, I just need Jungleland (whence Magic Rat), Thunder Road and Backstreets a little bit more. (That I was once engaged to marry a Wendy might also have something to do with it.)

I'm just glad we don't REALLY have to choose!

Ten is not enough to count essential Bruce songs. Ten ALBUMS, maybe... Still, I would tweak Magic Rat's list as follows (in no order)

Thunder Road
Backstreets
Jungleland
Stolen Car
She's the One
Drive All Night
The River
Promised Land
Incident on 57th Street (Listen to this Main Point performance and try not to love it!)
New York City Serenade - Walk tall, or baby, don't walk at all.]

I get 10 more, right?

I like these tweaks. Following on NY City Serenade, here are my ten favorite "walk tall" songs from Bruce:

No Surrender
Blood Brothers
Badlands
Prove it all Night
Independence Day
Tougher than the Rest
Youngstown
Born in the USA
Long Walk Home
. . . and, of course:
Walk Like a Man

Great list!

Okay, how about Top Moments of Doubt & Despair songs to which Walk Tall songs are the answer?

In no order:

1. Two Faces
2. Stolen Car
3. Darkness On The Edge Of Town
4. Point Blank
5. Dancing In The Dark
6. Streets Of Philadelphia
7. Roulette
8. Brilliant Disguise: "God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of."

Did I leave Price You Pay off my other list? Because it has to be on the list.
