How rare is the perfect single-CD summation of a great artist's career? Maybe a handful of them exist, and this is one. Portrait contains thirty songs, ranging from Cooke's very first session as the twenty-year old newbie in the venerable Soul Stirrers through his last session a few months before his tragic demise at age 33.

Every hit is here, every important track. All in the best sound quality possible on a CD. And the liner notes by Cooke's great biographer Peter Guaralnik are at once intimate and definitive.

What's missing is any hint of Sam Cooke as a live performer. For that you'll need to pick up a used copy of Live at the Harlem Square Club 1963.
