Stereo versions of "El Paso" omit four lines from the mono version that begin right after Our Hero shoots the handsome young stranger: "Just for a moment I stood there in silence, Shocked by the FOUL EVIL deed I had done. Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there; I had but one chance and that was to run." The 4:39 length is the mono single version.

"Rank Stranger" is a folk story in the form of a hymn sung by bluegrass legends. It`s in the Timeline because it`s such a great record I couldn`t leave it out. Never charted. It`s one of four songs in the Timeline that rank in the top 10 of country music`s 500 greatest singles in the book "Heartaches By The Number" by Cantwell and Friskics-Warren.

This song is based on the melody and arrangement of "What`cha Gonna Do," written by Atlantic Records` president Ahmet Ertegun, which was recorded by Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters and peaked at #2 on the R&B chart in spring 1955. Hank Ballard added new lyrics and recorded it as "The Twist," which barely made the top 20 on the R&B chart when first released as a B-side early in 1959. Re-released in July 1960, Ballard`s "Twist" began climbing the pop chart but soon became an historical footnote when Chubby Checker released a competing cover version with the promotional support of Dick Clark and American Bandstand. That version was a massive pop hit, the only song ever to attain the #1 position on the Hot 100 on two separate occasions more than a year apart. Musically, Hank Ballard`s version is far superior. Note that the CD source is the *1959* disc in the "Blowing The Fuse" series.

Some songs take a lot longer than others to climb the national charts. "Please Mr. Postman" was released in August 1961 and finally reached #1 on the pop charts - the first Motown song to do so - the last week in November (chart date December 11). The song was so popular and influential that its basic arrangement was copied by two of the biggest hits of 1962, "Mashed Potato Time" and "Monster Mash."

One of the greatest R&B instrumentals, this song owes its basic riff to a Duke Ellington composition, "Happy-Go-Lucky Local," one of four parts of his Deep South Suite, first recorded in 1946. Jimmy Forrest was a member of Ellington`s band when it performed the song. Forrest`s 1952 adaptation to a slow, earthy arrangement was a huge R&B hit and has stood the test of time. So has James Brown`s 1962 re-conceptualization of Night Train into an upbeat dance number with vocal recitation of a train ride of cities, which hit the pop as well as the R&B charts again.

Bring It On Home To Me and Having A Party were the A and B sides of RCA Victor 8036. One of the greatest two-sided singles in pop history! Although they both broke on the R&B charts at the same time, "Party" started its climb up the pop charts a full month before "Home." Essentially, "Party" hit first and "Home" became a hit as "Party" was waning. Apparently, the down home gospel vibe of "Home" delayed its acceptance at mainstream radio.

James Brown had to record his live show on his own dime, but was sweetly vindicated when the album climbed the pop charts all the way to #2 this summer. Whole sides of the album were played on black radio stations but it was the rare mainstream (white audience) station that played any of it.

Louie Louie is the rare rock & roll song whose story has merited an entire book (by Dave Marsh). Writer and original performer Richard Berry had been the uncredited bass singer on both "Riot in Cell Block #9" and "The Wallflower." His Jamaican-flavored ballad was a regional west coast hit that never charted. The Kingsmen turned it into a very popular garage-rock staple with nearly unintelligible lyrics and a crazy guitar break. The original Flip recording is hard to find. The Kingsmen`s cover completely transforms its sound and feel. Wikipedia provides more details.

This monster single introduced The Beatles to America and served as the lead track to the LP "Meet The Beatles," which appeared in both mono and stereo editions. The mono mix of the single sounds solid at the bottom and propulsive, driven by the bass guitar, bass drum and rhythmic handclaps, with understated guitars. The stereo mix sounds bouncier, lighter, and brighter. Bass and drums are separated from guitars, giving the guitars more prominence. Paul`s bass is barely audible. As a result, the mono mix rocks a lot harder than the stereo mix does.

Bobby Bland was better known as Bobby "Blue" Bland throughout his career. After 1960, however, "Blue" was usually omitted from his name on singles releases but not from his albums. I decided to omit "Blue" in the Timeline to make searching more consistent. See this discography for details.

Phil Spector recorded this song with both The Ronettes and Darlene Love in 1963 and (wisely) decided against releasing either of them as singles. The Ronettes version appeared on their debut album late in 1964. Love`s version was never released until the CD era. Mike Stoller cut a better version with The Dixie Cups, and the result was a resounding hit.

There are two versions of this song. #1 was recorded May 1964 in London and released in the U.S. only as a single and on the 12 x 5 album. #2 was recorded November 1964 at Chess Studios in Chicago and released in the UK in January 1965 on the Stones` second UK album, and later on both the Big Hits and Hot Rocks compilations. Here the song is sequenced as version #1 but the CD source is for version #2, which I prefer.
